El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank
June 28, 2020- Box after box and bread after bread, the El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank organizes and arranges boxes of food to distribute to the community. With the help of the Irvin JROTC Cadets, the Food bank could sort, organize, and examine food. In addition, the Irvin Cadets helped construct boxes for the Food Bank’s future use.
Before the cadets began handling canned food and packaged food, they were all given a slight lesson on what is “edible” and what is “not edible”. Information; such as denting on cans, expiration date information, and sealed or unsealed boxes and bags, was explained and made clear to the cadets. Afterwards, the cadets quickly became experts at sorting foods and did exactly that: examine, sort, and repeat.
Overall, the September visit to the food bank was successful in its mission to demonstrate how hard work and service to others relate to each other. By sorting and organizing these foods, the cadets not only received useful information for grocery shopping but also got the opportunity to make a contribution to the community.
