Orienteering
Orienteering is an event to teach cadets how to navigate their way around a deserted place by using a pointed grid map.
Learning to read a map is a useful skill anyone may need at any given moment. Whether you are out hiking with some friends, or participating in an outdoor scavenger hunt, this is a skill that is surely going to benefit you. In the fall semester, the JROTC cadets went out into the mountains to test their map reading skills and land navigation skills in a friendly competition among schools city-wide.
Whether it be North, South, East, or West, cadets intelligently search the area in all directions and terrain features. Schools from EPISD participated in this year’s fall orienteering meet. One of our own Rockets, Carmen Salas sealed the first place ranking in the Advanced Female Division. As William Feather once said, “One way to get the most out of life, is to look upon an adventure.” After all, orienteering is an event for the adventurous and competitive spirit.
